16 Dec Visit to Dulwich College in Shanghai
During the princely mission in China, Lieselot also visited the international school ‘Dulwich College‘ in Shanghai.
Dulwich College is an international school for children aged 2 – 18 years. The school offers a British Curriculum and emphasizes creativity. In the school, children can make their own film recordings, write and compose their own music, participate in school theatre and the school choir, take STEM-courses and take part in various competitions. Some 20 Belgians follow lessons at the international school. It is not always easy for the international school to keep these youngsters in touch with their mother tongue, because they do not always find a native speaker, like Belgian teachers in Shanghai. Cooperation with D-Teach is discussed in order to allow young people to follow online lessons for (native language) subjects where no teacher is available. D-Teach specializes in cooperation with other schools in order to compensate for the shortage of teachers and to give the schools the opportunity to expand their curriculum.
The following quote is from the website of Dulwich College:
“Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi educates children from age 2 to 18. The primary teaching language is English, with a Dual Language approach in Mandarin and English in DUCKS. Children up to age 5 follow the Early Years Foundation Stage, and from Year 1 to Year 9, they follow the National Curriculum of England and Wales, which is enhanced to meet the needs of our international student body. In Year 10 they begin the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), a rigorous two-year course that requires students to take a broad range of subjects covering maths and sciences, English and foreign languages, and the humanities. IGCSE will culminate in exams at the end of Year 11 and prepares students well for the two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) which will start in Year 12 in 2021.”
